“This was a safe and nurturing space for me to release the stressors of my day and shed the personal armor that I put on to go out into the world, and to experiment with being incredibly tender with myself.”

rediscover a sense of play

When we're stressed, it's so hard to be kind to ourselves and to have fun ~ even though that's what we most need! Poems That Love You is a unique, live workshop designed to help you find perspective, rediscover a sense of play, and remember that you are loved.

The workshop combines self-compassion and stress relief with creative expression. It will help you immerse in the beauty of poetry and the healing power of art journaling ~ in celebration of National Poetry Month!

In this comforting, retreat-like space you'll creatively explore accessible and relatable self-compassion poetry. Rather than simply reading poems, you'll connect with them in a personal way through the playful practice of art journaling. Together we'll experience how the simple act of putting pen or brush to paper can reduce stress and inspire self-trust and self-compassion in everyday life. The workshop will encourage you to relax, let go of self-judgment and appreciate your unique journey.

The Poems That Love You Workshop includes:

❤️  uplifting and thoughtfully curated self-compassion poems

❤️  gentle guidance in connecting with poetry, relieving stress and exploring emotions through art journaling

“It was such a gift to have this dedicated time to draw, listen, and reflect. Lea encouraged us to be playful and experiment. This was important as I don't draw regularly and can be quick to judge myself. I really appreciate Lea's heart-centered approach. I can't help but smile when I look at my drawing from the workshop.”

come as you are!

Poetry is for everyone and so is art journaling! You don't need any special skills or supplies for the Poems That Love You Workshop. Just bring something to write and draw with, and something to write and draw on. I will be using watercolors, and you may like to have some to use, too. But they are not necessary. Coming as you are, in the present moment, is the most important thing. ❤️

hello

I'm glad you're here

I'm Lea Seigen Shinraku, licensed therapist, self-compassion teacher, artist and 20+ year Zen practitioner. I've taught self-compassion classes for over 10 years and it has been my honor to guide hundreds of students in learning to be kind to themselves. I know the pain of self-judgment and the stress of everyday life right now. It's so important to find ways to have fun in the midst of what's so hard. Poetry and art journaling are gateways to healing, and they are central to my self-compassion teaching and everyday practice. Nothing means more to me than helping people accept themselves and express themselves creatively. If you struggle with self-judgment and stress, and you want more joy, confidence, ease and creativity in your life, I hope you'll join me for this uplifting workshop!

as seen in...

why poetry and art journaling?

history! science! and fun!

Poetry is the oldest form of written literature, and it has been a foundation of human culture for over 4,000 years. And for centuries, poems have been recognized for their power to heal. In ancient Greece, poetry was even "prescribed" alongside other medical interventions!

More recently, research has shown that engaging with poetry offers a safe way to meet difficult emotions, allowing us to process and understand them without getting overwhelmed. One study found that reading poems activates the brain's "restful state" regions, helping us relax and gain perspective on ourselves. Another revealed that listening to poetry reduces stress, improves memory and increases hopefulness. 🤗

And art-making has been part of everyday human civilization for even longer than poetry! In fact, the earliest known drawing was made about 73,000 years ago. We humans have been expressing ourselves visually for a long time! 🎨

Science continues to confirm what our ancestors have known for millenia: poetry and art have a positive impact on our health. Engaging in creative activities can reduce stress, improve self-awareness, and enhance emotional resilience. Creative expression can also support our physical wellness by lowering blood pressure, improving immune function, and promoting relaxation. Plus, it's fun!

By combining poetry and art journaling, the Poems That Love You workshop offers a gentle, playful way to reduce stress and nurture self-compassion, creativity, and overall well-being.

“Art journaling helps me to be very in-the-moment and present, and then I’m not getting carried away so far in the future. This is something that I will actually use. Thank you very much for teaching us simple ways to draw, because now I feel like I can do it.”

I like to make thoughtful decisions, too.

I know that these times we're living in are really hard. And you’re probably stressed, exhausted and looking for some comfort and relief. You also may have noticed that when you’re going through hard times, the inner critic gets louder. We can feel like relief and comfort aren't allowed.

It can seem like we shouldn’t do “frivolous” things.

But really, it’s during tough times when we need to give ourselves moments of joy and play wherever we find them.

It’s so important to have space where we can remind ourselves that nothing can take away our power to create and to appreciate what we find beautiful.

When I turn to poetry or to my art journal, it’s not as a way to escape from the tough things in life. It’s a way to remind myself that joy and beauty and play co-exist with pain and grief.

I’d love to be your guide and show you what the combination of self-compassion, poetry and creativity can do. In the Poems That Love You Workshop, we’ll explore this together, and practice finding joy and comfort right where we are. ❤️
