When the inner critic gets loud,
what do you actually do?
If you're like many of my students, you understand what self-compassion is and why it matters. But it's still hard to be kind to yourself on an ordinary day ~ when you spot a typo right after you hit send, keep replaying something you said in a meeting, or wonder what you did wrong when a friend doesn't text back. In those moments, the inner critic probably drowns out whatever you know about self-compassion.
That's because all the ideas and insight don't automatically translate into having a fundamentally different relationship with yourself.
In any relationship ~ whether it's with ourselves or someone else ~ what we do matters a lot more than what we say or think. It's through our actions that we show care and build trust. But there isn't much guidance out there about what to do, or how to strengthen the compassionate part of you.
Self-compassion is like a muscle. Practicing it in real life takes two things: knowing what to do, and having the strength to do it in the moment.
Think of your body: if you haven't strengthened your muscles, they aren't going to be there for you when you're lifting a heavy bag of groceries. You build that strength ahead of time, through simple, repeated actions, so it's there when you need it.
Art journaling works the same way.
Practice on the page gives your self-compassion skills a workout. It builds the strength you need when you spot that typo, replay what you said, or assume you did something wrong.
In this free, 90-minute live workshop, I'll show you what to do: a 3-step creative process that gets self-compassion out of your head, onto the page, and into your real life.
And don't worry ~ the art journaling practice itself is not complicated. If you can write the letters of the alphabet, you can do this.
Inside the workshop: Self-Compassion in Action
Know what to do, and do it
Know what to do
For when your critic gets loud
I'll teach you a simple 3-step process for meeting yourself where you are. Each step gives you something concrete to do on paper, and then you can use it anywhere, even without art supplies.
Do it
Practice with me, live
We'll draw, write, and add color together, with me guiding you the whole way. You'll leave having had an experience, not just more information. Then the page is yours to keep, and the process is yours to come back to, whenever you need to strengthen your self-compassion.

If we haven't met yet, I'm Lea
Lea Seigen Shinraku, MFT · licensed therapist and self-compassion teacher
Early in my career, I noticed how many of my therapy clients struggled with self-judgment, even after they understood self-compassion. I struggled with this, too. The meditations and reflective practices I used and shared helped, but they only went so far.
During Covid, I experienced a significant loss that changed the way I understand self-compassion. I realized I needed something active to do: a way to turn the three nouns of self-compassion into verbs. And I discovered that art journaling was uniquely powerful for that. That's where this 3-step process comes from, and I'll share the full story live in the workshop.
If self-judgment still shows up for you after years of trying, I'd love to have you join me.
Warmly,
Lea

“A hands-on way to be kinder to myself”
“The workshop taught me a hands-on way to be kinder to myself. Lea guided us to draw ourselves, demonstrating a simple way to do it. Suddenly, with me literally on the page, I was able to open up to the ideas ~ mind, body, and spirit. It was wonderful to feel an instant infusion of affection, understanding and compassion for myself.”

“I realized that I knew what to do”
“I realized that I knew what to do to ease these kind of moments by using the technique I learned. It really is true that processing emotions through art journaling is very effective!”
Madeleine R.
“An experience rather than just a lesson”
“I found the painting and drawing to be profound in cementing the concept in my mind. I have ADHD and while I learn quickly, my mind forgets just as fast. The imagery was perfect for making the class work memorable, and an experience rather than just a lesson.”
Daryl G.
“It definitely helps it sink in more and stick”
“The art journaling is really what helped me because it gets you focused. It was a way I've never learned before in my life. You have to physically do something with your body. I feel like the art journaling definitely helps it sink in more and stick.”
Kelsey G.
